NXP needed to unite over 1,100 employees at its Eindhoven headquarters. Moving away from traditional cellular offices, the goal was to create a modern, flexible workplace. This transformation focuses on optimizing space and using technology to accelerate innovation and collaboration across R&D and corporate teams.

Our Role
Veldhoen + Company was asked to develop the workplace strategy for the new headquarters environment, including data analysis, user engagement, behavioural advice, and adoption guidance.
Unique to this project was that we developed the strategy and design process in parallel, in close collaboration with design partner Hollandse Nieuwe. By directly linking insights about behaviour, needs, and space usage to design choices, a truly integrated concept emerged.
Our approach included:
· Workplace vision based on research and data
· Typology classification (research / corporate / digital)
· User interviews and co-creation
· Advice on workplace concept, programmatic choices, and behavioural interventions
· Guidance of the adoption process leading up to the move
Measuring is knowing. Design and implementation choices are substantiated with data – from sensor measurements to employee insights via surveys.
The Outcome
The new NXP headquarters covers 12,500 m², spread over two buildings (HTC 60 and HTC 91) – a reduction of 5,000 m² compared to the original accommodation, without compromising on functionality or comfort.
The environment is designed according to the principles of activity-based working, tailored to the three previously defined work typologies. Employees can now choose where and how they work, depending on their task, with zones for focus, collaboration, consultation, and meeting.
The strength of the design is particularly evident in the renewed atrium – expertly designed by our partner Hollandse Nieuwe. They managed to transform this previously dark, closed heart of the building into an inviting meeting place where technology, people, and brand come together. With smart interventions such as a light cast floor, visible coffee bar, open reception area, and a colourful dichroic lift shaft, a space has been created that welcomes, stimulates, and surprises visitors and employees. The showroom, town hall, and informal seating areas make the atrium a lively centre of the organisation – throughout the day.
Why It Matters
This case shows how strategy and design can reinforce each other when they are truly integrated. We are proud of:
· The sharp choices made based on data
· The integration of diverse user needs into one overarching concept
· The fact that an organisation like NXP not only renews the building but also future-proofs its way of working
For future clients, this project demonstrates how a smart workplace strategy contributes to space efficiency, cultural change, and employee satisfaction. And how strong collaboration – between strategy, design, and organisation – leads to impactful results.
